The Other Clausewitz Article in The Journal of Military History

This article titled “The Other Clausewitz: Findings from the Newly Discovered Correspondence between Marie and Carl von Clausewitz” was published earlier this year in The Journal of Military History.

The article is written, however, before my book and thereby served as the base for Marie von Clausewitz.

It is one hell of an experience to try to synthesize, distill and present various complex ideas in a relatively short essay. The process is hard, relentless and frustrating. But as everyone who has ever gone through it knows, this procedure is also useful and necessary for an aspiring book author, very much so.

When the peer-reviews came back for instance, I was so miserable and full of self-pity. I might have even finished a bottle of wine….

The criticism, however, helped me clarify many of my ideas, forced me to leave out others, and convinced me to dig deeper and harder into the source material.

The article “The Other Clausewitz” has also put me on the map of Clausewitz scholarship. I gained attention and even some pre-sales for my book. I also made a few friends and it has been great.

I am reprinting the article here with the kind permission of The Journal of Military History.
